The Institute of Philosophy and Sociology is the most prestigious and productive academic research centre in the field of social sciences in Bulgaria.

The Institute of Philosophy and Sociology at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (IPS) conducts comprehensive theoretical and empirical, fundamental and applied, philosophical, sociological, and scientific research on knowledge, values, people, and society in accordance with academic, national, and European standards and global scientific trends.

The IPS is a unique academic institution whose priorities include the study, interpretation, and analysis of social reality, popularization of classical and development of new concepts and analytical products, continuation and further advancement of relevant areas of social knowledge that are of great importance for the sustainable development of Bulgarian society, social progress, and the enhancement of well-being.

The activities of the IPS also include providing expert and consultancy services for management and organizational needs in all spheres of social practice related to Bulgaria’s socio-economic, cultural, and political development as well as the evolution of science as a social phenomenon. In short, the IPS mission as part of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences is to generate adequate knowledge about social processes by applying academic approaches and scientifically grounded research techniques, thereby creating reliable empirical arguments for optimizing policymaking processes in the major socio-economic areas.

The Institute of Philosophy and Sociology at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences currently:

  • carries out over 50 Bulgarian and European academic projects;
  • trains 23 doctoral students in sociology and philosophy;
  • conducts 16 operational activities for the benefit of the state; and
  • publishes 4 in-house scientific journals.
