The paper “Localised Pathways of Twin Transitions: Insights from the Energy Sector in Stara Zagora and Kozani” by the postdoctoral researcher Vasiliki Krommyda and Prof. Vassil Kirov from IPS-BAS was published in Sustainability (Q1).
The article examines the twin transitions in two coal-dependent regions: Stara Zagora, Bulgaria, and Kozani, Greece. Drawing on interviews with energy sector workers and other stakeholders, the research reveals significant gaps between European transition policies and local realities. Key findings highlight centralised decision-making, limited effectiveness of reskilling initiatives, and renewable energy projects that fail to generate sufficient quality employment or meaningful community engagement.
The study emphasises that a genuinely just transition requires democratic governance, stronger local participation, and policies that respond to the needs of affected workers and communities.
